Can your coach see if you are in the transfer portal? ›

Coaches are prohibited from sharing transfer portal information or access to the portal outside of the NCAA membership. DO COACHES SEE THE STUDENT-ATHLETE STATUS? YES, coaches will know if they can contact the student-athlete by viewing the student-athlete status.

One of the most problematic aspects of the portal is that there is no mandatory orientation session for prospective transfer portal applicants that highlight the pros and cons of their decision and there are few guard rails that protect student-athletes from making impulsive decisions.

Before initiating communications with other programs, you must inform your current coach of your intent to transfer and secure a permission-to-contact letter from your athletic department or compliance office. Make sure you plan ahead and begin this process early.

In a case where a player enters the transfer portal and doesn't find a new school there, he or she can decide to transfer elsewhere as a scholarship player or as a walk-on. The player is free to withdraw from the portal at any time. Or he/she can choose to enter the transfer portal some other time.

You can lose your scholarship at your current institution if you enter the transfer portal. When you decide to enter the transfer portal, you are basically forfeiting your roster spot at your current school. Therefore, the coaching staff and the institution have the ability to discontinue your scholarship.

So entering the portal is effectively walking out on a pre-existing scholarship in many cases. This makes sense to a degree, that if you quit on the team they shouldn't have to pay for you. But in reality, many portal athletes will not find a great landing spot, and some won't find one at all.

The NCAA will no longer limit the amount of times that athletes can transfer schools. Previously, athletes were allowed to transfer one time and play immediately, but they had to sit out a full year if they transferred schools a second time without a waiver.

A player can opt to withdraw his or her name from the transfer portal at any time. Once a player enters the transfer portal, the program the athlete currently attends is no longer required to honor the player's scholarship.

These windows govern entry only — athletes can remain in the portal indefinitely until they find a new home. If they change their minds, they can withdraw and try to return to their old team… though their original squad can rescind their roster spot and/or scholarship as soon as they enter.

27. NCAA rules allow underclassmen to transfer once without having to sit out a year. But an additional transfer as an undergraduate generally requires the NCAA to grant a waiver allowing the athlete to compete immediately. Without it, the athlete would have to sit out for a year at the new school.

With that being said, it seems as if the transfer portal is erasing the line between student-athletes and professional athletes. As professionals, players are able to request trades or sign with other teams in free agency.

If you decide to stay after initiating the transfer, your scholarship could be at risk, as your current school may rescind future scholarship offers or allocate them to other student-athletes. To access the NCAA Transfer Portal, you will need to provide written notice to your college's designated administrator.

The NCAA Transfer Portal is a private database that includes the names of student-athletes in every sport at the Division I, II, and III levels. The full list of names is not available to the public. A player can enter their name into the transfer portal through their school's compliance office.

The NCAA Transfer Portal is only accessible to NCAA Division I (DI), Division II (DII), and Division III (DIII) coaches and administrators. NAIA and two-year colleges do not have access to the NCAA Transfer Portal. For college student-athletes, deciding to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal can be a game-changer.

After your name enters the Transfer Portal, you will receive an email, verifying a coach's ability to contact you.

Based on your situation, there is no right or wrong time to tell your coach you are transferring. If you're in season and want to wait till the end to tell them, you can wait. But if you can't take one more second of it, then go ahead and tell them you're transferring.
