Variations

  • Whipped Cream. Substitute whipped cream instead of shaving cream in this easy DIY. This is a good substitute if you are concerned with children licking fingers while doing this activity. We love this for another fun way to dye eggs.
  • Gel Food Color. We used liquid but you can try using gel if you prefer to color Easter eggs.
  • Soak in vinegar. For a deeper color, you can soak the hard-boiled eggs in white vinegar prior to dying the eggs.
  • Different color combinations. Get creative and try multiple colors and your own color combinations.

Tips and Tricks

  • Disposable pan. I like to give each child a disposable pan. This really makes clean up a breeze! Plus, there is no fighting or arguing and each child can create the design in their color choice.
  • Large Pan. Make sure to use a large pan. The shaving cream mixture can make a mess and you want to keep it inside the pan.
  • Gloves. It is important to use gloves while you combine the shaving cream and food coloring. Dyed Easter Eggs can be messy during the process and until they dry. Using gloves will help to prevent hands from being stained.
  • Allow to set. The eggs need time to set before wiping off the shaving cream. We waited 2 hours, and they turned out perfectly. You can wipe them off as soon as 5-10 minutes, but the color will not be as vibrant.
  • Disposable tablecloth. We suggest using a plastic tablecloth to protect your table. Then you can easily roll everything up and toss in the trash.
  • Most Vibrant Colors. You can use any type of regular food coloring, but gel will be the most vibrant. I prefer this over regular food dye.
  • Swirling the dye. You can use a toothpick, wood skewers or a fork to make squiggles or straight lines. I also have used paintbrushes and Q-Tips to swirl. All of these will create pretty designs.
